Australia delivers a disciplined performance to upset Turkey and move level with the United States atop Group D.
Australia made a strong start to its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory over Turkey, handing Vincenzo Montella a disappointing defeat in his first World Cup match as Turkish head coach.
The Socceroos combined defensive organization with clinical finishing to secure three valuable points in Group D. Goals from rising star Nestory Irankunda and midfielder Connor Metcalfe proved enough to overcome a Turkish side that struggled to turn possession into clear scoring opportunities.
Turkey entered the match hoping to celebrate its return to the World Cup after a 24-year absence, but quickly found itself frustrated by Australia’s disciplined defensive structure.
Led by captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu in midfield, the Turkish side controlled stretches of possession but found very little space in the final third. Australia remained compact and dangerous on the counterattack throughout the first half.
The breakthrough arrived in the 27th minute when Irankunda produced a moment of individual brilliance. The young forward showcased his pace and technical quality before beating the Turkish defense and finding the back of the net to give the Socceroos a deserved 1-0 lead.
Montella introduced additional attacking options in the second half, including Juventus star Kenan Yıldız, but Australia continued to defend effectively and limited Turkey to few meaningful chances.
As Turkey pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Australia struck again. In the 75th minute, Connor Metcalfe finished off a swift counterattack to double the advantage and effectively end the contest.
The result places Australia level on points with the United States at the top of Group D following the Americans’ 4-1 victory over Paraguay. For Turkey, the defeat immediately increases the pressure ahead of crucial matches against the United States and Paraguay.
