Brazil 1-1 Morocco: Vinícius Júnior Cancels Out Saibari as Ancelotti Settles for a Point

Morocco impresses once again on the World Cup stage while Brazil struggles to find rhythm in Carlo Ancelotti’s tournament debut.

Carlo Ancelotti’s first FIFA World Cup match as Brazil head coach ended in disappointment as the Seleção was held to a 1-1 draw by a disciplined and ambitious Morocco side.

The African nation, one of the breakout teams of the 2022 World Cup, once again proved capable of competing with the world’s elite. Morocco took a deserved first-half lead through Ismael Saibari before Vinícius Júnior restored parity ten minutes later. Despite Brazil’s superior talent on paper, it was Morocco that came closest to claiming all three points in dramatic fashion.

Morocco began the match with confidence and intensity, unsettling the Brazilian defense from the opening whistle. Their positive approach was rewarded in the 20th minute when Brahim Díaz delivered a brilliant through ball between Marquinhos and Gabriel. Saibari timed his run perfectly and delicately chipped Alisson to give Morocco a deserved 1-0 lead.

Brazil struggled to impose itself during the opening half hour and looked vulnerable defensively. However, individual quality once again came to the rescue.

In the 31st minute, Bruno Guimarães found Vinícius Júnior on the left side of the penalty area. The Real Madrid star cut inside and unleashed a powerful right-footed strike that beat Bono at the far post to level the score at 1-1.

The equalizer changed the momentum temporarily, but Brazil never truly found its best football. Morocco remained compact, organized, and dangerous on the counterattack, limiting the South Americans’ opportunities throughout the second half.

Ancelotti introduced several substitutes in an attempt to find a winner, but Morocco continued to frustrate the five-time world champions. In fact, the best chance of the closing stages fell to the Atlas Lions.

Deep into stoppage time, Neil El Aynaoui forced Alisson into a superb save before the Liverpool goalkeeper reacted brilliantly again to deny Amaimouni on the rebound. The double save preserved the draw and prevented a famous Moroccan victory.

The result leaves Group C surprisingly led by Scotland, following its opening win over Haiti. Brazil and Morocco begin their campaigns with one point each, keeping qualification hopes firmly in their own hands heading into Matchday 2.
