Bianconeri coach calls for stronger personalities after disappointing finish: “We need players who can handle pressure”
Luciano Spalletti delivered one of his clearest assessments yet of Juventus FC’s shortcomings after the final match of the season, insisting the squad lacks the personality and character required to compete at the highest level.
Speaking after the Derby della Mole, Spalletti aligned himself publicly with the club hierarchy and sporting director Damien Comolli, stressing the need for major improvements in the squad.
“We have the obligation to create the conditions to face anyone with our heads held high and always play to win,” Spalletti said.
“A high-level team must be built to overcome the limits we have seen during these seven months.”
“Character makes the difference”
While acknowledging the team’s effort throughout the season, the Juventus coach made clear what he believes has been missing most.
“For me, the difference is always made by people’s character,” he explained.
“Personalities sometimes align, but character is what truly makes the difference.”
Spalletti revealed that discussions with the club’s management have already focused on bringing in stronger mental profiles.
“With Comolli and the club we have spoken, and we all agree that we need some players with the personality to come through certain moments.”
“Too many doubts”
The veteran coach pointed directly to Juventus’ inconsistency during the campaign, explaining how moments of uncertainty repeatedly undermined the team.
“There’s a reason why we played periods of great football but also failed badly in some matches,” he said.
“We need players who are not conditioned by individual episodes and continue playing the same way until the end.”
Spalletti warned that uncertainty and fear cannot exist inside a club like Juventus.
“Doubts exist, but you have to overcome them. If you remain trapped in doubt every time, it means you don’t have character—and then you cannot play for Juventus.”
“Character cannot be taught”
The Juventus coach drew a sharp distinction between tactical development and mentality, insisting some qualities simply cannot be coached.
“You can teach technique. You can teach tactics. But you cannot teach character,” Spalletti stated.
According to the former Italy manager, that mental fragility ultimately cost Juventus crucial points during the decisive phase of the season.
“That’s what we paid for in these matches.”
A lesson from the derby
Spalletti also referenced the latest derby as a perfect example of the growth still required inside the squad.
“Everyone was asking about the other results at halftime, but we had the match under control and we should never have lost it,” he explained.
“That’s where you see the growth we still need to make.”
After a season full of highs and lows, Spalletti’s message is now unmistakable: talent alone is not enough for Juventus. To return to the top, the Bianconeri must rediscover the mentality and leadership that once defined the club.
