Donnarumma: “We Know What We Felt After Macedonia—We Don’t Want That Again”

Italy captain calls for calm and belief ahead of decisive World Cup playoff in Bosnia

On the eve of Italy’s most important match in years, Gianluigi Donnarumma stepped forward as a true captain—calm, honest, and fully aware of what’s at stake.

“We feel the responsibility toward the fans and the entire country,” he said from Zenica. “We know it won’t be easy, but we’re ready.”

The weight of the past

For Donnarumma, this isn’t just another high-pressure game—it’s personal.

The memory of Italy’s shocking elimination against North Macedonia in 2022 still lingers, a moment that left a deep mark on the squad.

“Only we know what we felt after that night,” he admitted. “We don’t want to experience those emotions again.”

That pain, however, has become fuel.

Calm over chaos

Despite the intensity surrounding the match, Donnarumma emphasized the importance of staying composed.

“We need serenity,” he said. “We have to focus on the game without thinking too much about everything around it.”

Italy expects a hostile atmosphere in Zenica, but the goalkeeper made it clear that external factors cannot become distractions.

Respect for Bosnia

Donnarumma also showed full respect for the opponent, highlighting both their structure and individual quality.

“They’re a strong team with great players,” he said. “We’ve studied them carefully.”

Among those players is Edin Džeko, whom Donnarumma described as “a magnificent striker.”

To win, Italy will need to match Bosnia’s intensity.

“We’ll have to play at 100 miles per hour—just like them,” he added.

One of the biggest nights

The PSG goalkeeper didn’t shy away from the magnitude of the occasion.

“This is one of the most important matches of my career,” he said. “We haven’t been to a World Cup in 12 years—we don’t want to wait any longer.”

At the same time, he expressed pride in his journey with the national team, from the triumph of Euro 2020 to the disappointments that followed.

Ready for the moment

Donnarumma’s message is clear: Italy knows the pressure, understands the risk—but believes in its ability to deliver.

“We’re human, we feel everything,” he said. “But we also have the experience to handle nights like this.”

Now, with everything on the line, the Azzurri captain is ready to lead.

And this time, he wants a different ending.
