Totti: “It’s do or die for Italy — we must go to the World Cup” (VIDEO)

Roma legend speaks at Operazione Nostalgia about the Azzurri, Dybala’s future, and the Champions League race

At the sidelines of Operazione Nostalgia in Rome, Francesco Totti shared his thoughts on Italy’s crucial upcoming fixture, the pressure surrounding the national team, and key talking points in Serie A — from Roma’s ambitions to Paulo Dybala’s uncertain future.

“It will be a very difficult match — it’s do or die”

Totti began by addressing Italy’s current situation, with the Azzurri heading into a decisive match after a strong first leg.

“Let’s say we won the first half, and now with Tuesday it will be a big battle, it will be a very difficult match. It’s do or die, so we hope that Rino can give them that strength, that desire to go and play in this World Cup.”

The former Roma captain acknowledged the psychological burden weighing on the team, especially after recent failures to qualify.

“Of course the pressure is there, it’s a one-off match, anything can happen. Let’s say that a third World Cup missed by Italy would be madness. But I think the team is there, the coach is convinced, so we all support Italy.”

“The important thing is to win”

Totti also touched on individual talent and whether Italy currently lacks creativity.

“I hope so, him like many others — the important thing is to win, as I said the other day.”

“Maybe right now something is missing. You need to bring home the result, that’s the main thing. Technique or physicality — in that moment you just need to get it done.”

“Inter must win the title, Roma must keep up”

Looking ahead to Serie A, Totti analyzed the upcoming clash between Inter Milan and AS Roma, a key fixture in the race for Champions League qualification.

“It’s a difficult match, because Inter absolutely have to win the league. Roma need to stay on the heels of Como and Juventus, so it’s a tough game — when you play at San Siro it’s never easy.”

“Of course, you have to get points. To catch Como you need points, so you have to go there open-minded, without fear, and play your game.”

At the moment, Totti sees Como 1907 as the team holding the advantage in the race for fourth place.

“Right now it’s Como — they’re fourth, so it’s right that it’s them. But Juventus and Roma are right there, waiting.”

“You lose a lot technically without Dybala”

On the future of Paulo Dybala, Totti was clear about the Argentine’s importance to Roma, despite recurring injury concerns.

“I don’t know. Of course, technically you lose a lot. I’ve always said he’s the most talented player in the team, but if they make this decision, surely — and I hope — it will be reconsidered.”

A light-hearted ending

Totti closed the exchange with a joke about a potential comeback, showing that the competitive fire — and humor — are still very much alive.

“You replace him. Well, I’m ready for 50 years old. I’ve still shown something, haven’t I?”
