Italiano’s Europa League Dream Continues: “We Climbed a Mountain”

Bologna boss celebrates famous win over Roma and reveals health scare behind his quick dash to the locker room

It was a night to remember for Bologna FC 1909—and especially for head coach Vincenzo Italiano.

After knocking out AS Roma in a dramatic Europa League Round of 16 clash, Italiano didn’t hold back his emotions. At the final whistle, he sprinted straight down the tunnel, celebrating a result he described as a true “mountain climbed.”

“We did it—you saw what the Olimpico was like tonight,” he said. “It was a beautiful game, a tight battle, maybe 51-49. But we found a way to win. Credit to my players for an incredible performance.”

Tactics, Belief, and Cup DNA

Italiano once again showed why he has built a reputation as a knockout-stage specialist.

From his previous runs with Fiorentina to lifting the Coppa Italia last season, his teams consistently rise to the occasion in cup competitions. Against Roma, Bologna executed a smart tactical plan—stretching play, adapting in transition, and relying on key contributions from players like Federico Bernardeschi and Rowe.

“We knew we had to adjust when we couldn’t break into their box,” Italiano explained. “In these games, especially in extra time, one moment decides everything.”

Despite acknowledging that Roma may have had the stronger squad on paper, Italiano emphasized Bologna’s ability to close the gap with organization, precision, and mentality.

The Reason Behind His Sudden Exit

There was also a personal moment behind Italiano’s immediate dash to the locker room.

Following a recent bout of pneumonia, the coach revealed he is under strict medical supervision and must head straight for post-match checks.

“My doctor told me I have to go immediately after the game,” he said with a smile. “If I stay out too long, he gets on my case. So I had to run inside and get warm.”

Eyes Already on the Next Challenge

Even in the middle of celebration, Italiano’s focus quickly shifted forward.

Bologna will now face Aston Villa in the quarterfinals—another step up in difficulty. Once again, they’ll enter as underdogs.

“We’ve honored this competition from day one,” Italiano said. “We’ll celebrate tomorrow, then get back to work. This tournament is beautiful, and we want to keep dreaming.”

He also paid tribute to the atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico, calling it “incredible” and admitting it could intimidate any team—yet Bologna managed to rise above it.

And now, with momentum and belief on their side, they’re not done yet.
