Flat performance from Atalanta in Belgium as a second-half set-piece goal ends hopes of a direct spot in the Champions League round of 16.
Atalanta’s hopes of finishing inside the top eight of the Champions League league phase were dashed on Matchday 8, as Raffaele Palladino’s side suffered a narrow 1–0 defeat away to Union Saint-Gilloise. A subdued display from La Dea was punished in the second half, forcing the Italian side into the playoff round rather than direct qualification for the round of 16.
After already letting a crucial opportunity slip against Athletic Club, Atalanta needed a convincing performance in Brussels. Instead, they delivered one of their least incisive outings of the European campaign, rarely troubling the Belgian side and ultimately paying the price.
The decisive moment came in the 70th minute from a set-piece situation. El Hadj’s free kick found Khalaili, who struck a brilliant right-footed volley. Sportiello got a hand to it but could not prevent the ball from crossing the line. Despite the win, Union Saint-Gilloise themselves failed to secure a playoff berth, making the result even more frustrating from Atalanta’s perspective.
Chances were scarce for the visitors throughout the match. The only real opportunity of note before the break came when Lookman fired a right-footed effort that was deflected behind by Scherpen. In the closing stages, Atalanta finally pushed forward with more urgency, but Sulemana squandered a golden chance to equalize, misfiring from close range after a cross by De Ketelaere.
The defeat leaves Atalanta outside the top eight, meaning they will have to navigate the playoff round to reach the last 16. Their potential opponents will be one of Borussia Dortmund or Olympiacos, adding further difficulty to an already demanding European path.
