Haraldsson’s early strike punishes Roma, while Dovbyk and Soulé squander three spot-kicks at the Olimpico
Roma suffered their first Europa League defeat of the season, falling 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico to Lille in a night defined by missed opportunities. Despite dominating possession in the second half, the Giallorossi were undone by an early defensive error and an astonishing sequence of missed penalties.
The French side took the lead after just six minutes when Kostas Tsimikas, starting on the left in place of Angelino, carelessly lost the ball while trying to play out from the back. Lille’s Correia pounced on the mistake and set up Hákon Haraldsson, who slotted past Svilar to make it 1-0.
Roma struggled to respond and looked vulnerable on the counter, with Lille threatening to double their advantage on several occasions. The hosts did have a huge chance before the break when El Ayanoui saw his shot cleared off the line after a chaotic scramble in the box.
In the second half, Gian Piero Gasperini introduced El Shaarawy, Koné, and striker Artem Dovbyk in search of a spark. The substitutions seemed to change the tempo, and Roma were handed a golden opportunity to level when the referee awarded them a penalty. What followed, however, was remarkable: Dovbyk missed twice from the spot—one saved, one off target—before Soulé also failed to convert a retake.
Ozer, Lille’s goalkeeper, emerged as the hero with three penalty stops, while Olivier Giroud had a quiet evening but saw his teammates do enough to protect the lead. Roma pushed hard in stoppage time, but Lille held firm to celebrate a famous away win in Italy.
For Gasperini’s Roma, the defeat raises serious questions about sharpness in attack and discipline in defense, while Lille take command of the group thanks to clinical finishing and remarkable resilience under pressure.
