Manchester City 2-0 Napoli: Haaland and Doku Strike as Di Lorenzo’s Red Card Sinks Conte’s Side

A red card to Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo after just 21 minutes turned the match in Manchester City’s favor, with Haaland and Doku sealing the win in the second half.

Napoli’s Champions League debut under Antonio Conte ended in disappointment at the Etihad Stadium, where a strong Manchester City side capitalized on an early red card to win 2-0.

The game’s key moment came in the 21st minute when Giovanni Di Lorenzo was sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity after bringing down Erling Haaland. The decision forced Conte to reorganize his team, sacrificing Kevin De Bruyne for Olivera to restore balance in defense.

Despite being a man down, Napoli managed to hold firm until halftime, thanks largely to an outstanding performance from Milinkovic-Savic in goal. The Serbian keeper produced three crucial saves to keep his team in contention.

City’s breakthrough came in the 56th minute. Phil Foden delivered a perfect cross, and Haaland rose above Buongiorno to head home, giving Guardiola’s side a deserved lead. Nine minutes later, Jeremy Doku sealed the result with a stunning solo run, weaving past Beukema and Spinazzola before slotting the ball into the far corner.

From there, City controlled possession and comfortably saw out the game, while Napoli, exhausted and stretched, could not find a way back.

For Conte’s men, Politano was a bright spot, tirelessly working on both ends of the pitch, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the disadvantage of playing with ten men for most of the match.
