Bosnia takes the lead through Lukic, but a late goal from substitute Cyle Larin earns Canada a deserved draw in Toronto.
Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina shared the points in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, drawing 1-1 in Toronto after an entertaining Group B encounter.
The European side looked on course for victory after Sasa Lukic’s first-half goal, but Canada’s growing pressure eventually paid off when substitute Cyle Larin found the equalizer eleven minutes from time.
Bosnia head coach Sergej Barbarez surprisingly left veteran striker Edin Dzeko on the bench, but his team still managed to make the most of its best opportunity in the opening half.
The breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute from a set piece. Sead Kolasinac flicked on a corner kick and Lukic was perfectly positioned at the far post to head home from close range and give Bosnia a 1-0 advantage.
Canada had opportunities to level the score before halftime, but Juventus forward Jonathan David failed to convert a golden chance, firing too close to Nikola Vasilj after finding space inside the penalty area.
The second half belonged largely to Jesse Marsch’s side. Canada pushed forward aggressively and came close on several occasions. Kolasinac produced a crucial goal-line clearance after Richie Laryea’s effort struck the crossbar, while Katic denied Tani Oluwaseyi with another important defensive intervention.
The pressure finally paid off in the 79th minute. Promise David, introduced from the bench earlier in the half, delivered an excellent pass into the area for fellow substitute Larin. The striker controlled the ball and fired a clinical volley past Vasilj to make it 1-1.
Both teams searched for a winner in the closing stages, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough. Bosnia almost paid the price for sitting too deep after taking the lead, while Canada was rewarded for its persistence with a point that keeps Group B wide open.
With Qatar and Switzerland still to play, Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina begin their World Cup campaigns with one point each.
