France 3-0 Sweden: Mbappé Double, Olise Magic Send Les Bleus Into Paraguay Clash

Kylian Mbappé scored twice, Bradley Barcola added another, and Michael Olise delivered a brilliant creative performance as France dominated Sweden in the World Cup Round of 32.

France did not just beat Sweden. It overwhelmed it.

Didier Deschamps’ team cruised into the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3-0 win, producing one of the most complete performances of the Round of 32. Kylian Mbappé scored twice, Bradley Barcola added the second goal, and Michael Olise turned the game into a showcase of vision, timing and technical class.

The result sets up a last-16 meeting with Paraguay, fresh off its stunning penalty-shootout win over Germany. But this France looks nothing like a team weighed down by doubt. Les Bleus are confident, deep, explosive and increasingly spectacular.

Sweden tried to be brave on paper. Graham Potter started Anthony Elanga, Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres together, hoping to stretch France and threaten in transition. In reality, the first half quickly became a French monologue.

France controlled possession, camped in Sweden’s half and created chance after chance. The only things keeping the score level were the post, goalkeeper Zetterström and a surprising lack of finishing precision. Mbappé hit the woodwork, Olise nearly scored one of the goals of the tournament with a spectacular bicycle kick that also struck the post, and Ousmane Dembélé came close after another chaotic sequence in the Swedish box.

Sweden briefly threatened through Isak, who forced Mike Maignan into action and later sent a diagonal effort just wide. But those moments were rare. Gyökeres was completely isolated, Elanga and Isak had to fight with limited service, and the Swedish buildup too often turned into hopeful long balls that France easily recovered.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 45th minute.

Mbappé took responsibility, drove into the box from the left and created the separation he needed before finishing with his right foot. It was another ruthless World Cup goal from the French captain, who celebrated by running to embrace Deschamps. With that strike, France had the lead it had deserved for most of the half.

Once the wall was broken, Sweden had no answer.

France doubled the lead early in the second half with one of the cleanest attacking moves of the match. Aurélien Tchouaméni helped start the vertical action, Olise found the perfect passing lane, and Barcola finished with composure to make it 2-0 in the 53rd minute.

From there, France played with complete control. Adrien Rabiot gave the midfield power and balance, Tchouaméni dictated the rhythm, and Jules Koundé pushed forward constantly, almost operating like an extra midfielder. Dembélé did not produce his best performance, but France had so many attacking weapons that it barely mattered.

Olise then delivered again.

In the 74th minute, he produced his second assist of the night, setting up Mbappé for the third goal. The France star completed his double and moved level with Lionel Messi at the top of the tournament scoring chart.

Sweden never found a way back. Lindelöf endured a nightmare night, Gyökeres barely appeared in the match, and Potter’s side looked outmatched in every area of the field.

For France, this was a statement. The final score was 3-0, but it could easily have been more. Les Bleus hit the post twice, created close to endless danger and gave the impression of a team that can shift gears whenever it wants.

Now comes Paraguay, the team that just eliminated Germany. But if this version of France arrives again, stopping Mbappé, Olise, Barcola and the rest of Deschamps’ attacking machine may be the hardest task left in the tournament.
