Ivory Coast 1-0 Ecuador: Amad Diallo Strikes Late to Deliver Crucial Victory

A dramatic 90th-minute winner gives the Elephants three valuable points after Ecuador rattled the woodwork three times in a cruel Group E opener.

Ivory Coast claimed one of the most dramatic victories of Matchday 1 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Ecuador 1-0 thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Amad Diallo.

The result gives Emerse Faé’s side a massive three points in Group E, but the scoreline tells only part of the story. Ecuador matched the African champions throughout the contest and will leave Philadelphia wondering how they failed to score after striking the woodwork three times.

For long stretches, Sebastián Beccacece’s side looked the more dangerous team. Ecuador pressed aggressively, moved the ball with confidence, and repeatedly came within inches of breaking the deadlock.

The first warning arrived in the 23rd minute. Former Venezia winger John Yeboah capitalized on a turnover deep in the Ivorian half and unleashed a brilliant curling effort from outside the box. Goalkeeper Yahia Fofana was beaten, but the crossbar came to Ivory Coast’s rescue.

Just seven minutes later, Ecuador struck the woodwork again. Alan Minda timed his run perfectly into the penalty area and attempted a precise finish into the top corner, only to see his effort crash against the crossbar.

The second half continued in similar fashion. Ecuador came agonizingly close to scoring once more when Pedro Vite combined brilliantly with a teammate before firing from a tight angle. Fofana could only watch as the ball struck the post and bounced away.

Ivory Coast eventually responded with a near miss of its own. In the 51st minute, Yan Diomande burst down the right flank and delivered a dangerous cross toward Elye Wahi. The striker met the ball first time, but his effort rattled the crossbar, producing the fourth strike against the frame of the goal in a remarkably unlucky match.

As the game entered its final stages, both teams continued searching for a breakthrough. Ecuador appeared comfortable enough to settle for a point, while Ivory Coast pushed forward with greater urgency.

The decisive moment finally arrived in the 90th minute. Defender Wilfried Singo delivered a perfect ball into the danger area, where substitute Amad Diallo arrived at the right moment and guided a composed left-footed finish inside the far post.

The late winner sparked wild celebrations among the Ivorian players, coaching staff, and supporters. For Ecuador, it was a heartbreaking ending to a match in which they arguably deserved more.

The victory puts Ivory Coast in a strong early position in Group E, while Ecuador now faces increased pressure heading into its second match of the tournament.
