Allegri in Tears Remembering Galeone: “He Was Ahead of His Time”

The former Juventus and Milan coach pays emotional tribute to his mentor Giovanni Galeone, recalling lessons that still shape his football philosophy today.

Massimiliano Allegri struggled to hold back tears as he paid tribute to his longtime mentor Giovanni Galeone during the inaugural award ceremony dedicated to the legendary Italian coach.

Speaking at the event honoring the former Pescara manager, Allegri reflected on the profound impact Galeone had on his career, both as a coach and as a person. The emotional tribute came as the former Milan and Juventus boss, widely expected to take charge of Napoli, remembered the man who helped shape his footballing vision.

“He immediately struck me during our very first training session because he said things about football, about the technical side of the game, that I had never heard before,” Allegri recalled. “Those ideas stayed with me and I still carry them today.”

For Allegri, Galeone’s greatest quality was his ability to see the game differently from everyone else.

“The coach was truly a pioneer, someone who was ahead of his time. The things he was saying thirty or forty years ago are still valid today. In fact, some of them still sound innovative.”

Galeone, who became famous for his attacking football and unconventional personality, influenced generations of Italian coaches. Allegri remains one of his most successful disciples, having won multiple Serie A titles and domestic trophies throughout his managerial career.

Lessons Beyond Football

Allegri explained that some of the most valuable teachings he received from Galeone were not strictly tactical.

“One of the things I learned from him was not to take yourself too seriously, while taking your work very seriously. That is something I have always carried with me and I hope I never lose it.”

The coach admitted that with age comes a certain risk of losing the spontaneity and fearlessness that defined Galeone’s character.

“As you become older, more reasonable and perhaps wiser, you lose some of that recklessness. Galeone never lost it. He kept it until his very last day.”

A Final Meeting to Remember

Allegri also shared memories of his final encounter with Galeone, which took place in Udine last year.

“I saw him for the last time in Udine. He was smiling, just as always, and he was ready with the right word at the right moment.”

The emotion in Allegri’s voice was evident as he concluded his tribute by highlighting the affection Galeone continues to inspire.

“I believe that wherever he is watching us from, he can see how much this city loves him.”

The ceremony served as a reminder of Galeone’s enduring legacy in Italian football, not only through his achievements on the touchline but also through the generations of coaches and players who continue to carry forward his ideas.

For Allegri, that legacy remains alive every day, both on and off the pitch.
