Following Saturday night’s violent clashes at the Basiliano station following the Udinese-Venezia match, the Udine court validated the arrests of eight fans involved. Seven of them were released from prison, while a young Senegalese remains under house arrest with an electronic bracelet.
Charges brought against those apprehended include train blockade, aggravated affray, resisting a public official, and using pyrotechnic devices and sticks at sporting events. Among the defendants, five Austrian Salzburg fans took plea bargain sentences of 1 year and 8 months in prison, while one of their compatriots of Bosnian origin received a slightly higher 2-year sentence. A young man residing in Friuli, of Albanian origin, on the other hand, took a plea deal of 1 year and 10 months. All received suspended sentences and returned to freedom.
The situation is different for the eighth arrestee, a young Senegalese man, who remains under house arrest pending further developments. As a high school senior, he will still be allowed to travel to school.
Udine Police Chief Domenico Farinacci issued a five-year Daspo for all eight fans involved, banning them from participating in sporting events. Investigations, however, are continuing: the Questura is trying to identify other perpetrators in order to clarify the full dynamics of the assault and ascertain any further responsibility.
