On Saturday night a violent clash occurred between ultras of Udinese, along with fans of Salzburg with whom they are twinned, and Venezia in Basiliano. The incident resulted in 11 injuries, including 3 officers, and led to the arrest of 8 people.
The ambush occurred around 6:10 p.m., when a group of Udinese ultras, flanked by Salzburg fans, attacked supporters of Venezia, accompanied by some Rapid Vienna supporters. Law enforcement quickly intervened, but the violence left a heavy toll: six people ended up in jail and two under house arrest. Today the judge is to validate the measures.
According to initial reconstructions, the Austrian ultras, all of whom are incensed, will receive Daspo and will be repatriated, as there is no danger of flight. The affair was also surprising because of the profiles of those arrested, including a bank employee and a youth coach of an Austrian club.
Il ruolo di alcool e droga negli scontri
Authorities point out that alcohol and drug abuse is a major factor in the escalation of these violent incidents. The ultras, charged with adrenaline, often end up losing control, turning fan encounters into veritable battlegrounds.
In addition to the physical damage, the incident had serious economic consequences. The train on which some fans were traveling was damaged, causing delays on the railway line and a total damage of about one million euros for the State Railways.
Massima allerta per Venezia-Roma e Napoli-Udinese
After the Basiliano clashes, the Digos is keeping a high level of attention ahead of Sunday’s delicate challenges: Napoli-Udinese, scheduled for the evening, and Venezia-Roma, in the afternoon at the Penzo stadium.
Of particular concern is the Venice match, given the historic friendship between Roma and Udinese ultras. As colleagues from La Gazzetta dello Sport report, there is a fear that a group of Friulian fans may reach the lagoon city with belligerent intentions. Law enforcement officials are ready to tighten security to prevent new episodes of violence.
