LAZIO – January 30, 2008. After a hundred days, Delio Rossi’s Lazio returned to winning on the road: it did so with sweat and sacrifice, in Florence, in the delicate return leg of the Coppa Italia quarterfinals. Semioli’s early lead had, and not a little, complicated the biancoceleste team’s plans and nervousness had compromised the fluidity of the maneuver.

Former Vieri and Osvaldo put the Capitoline rearguard in crisis on more than one occasion, but excellent Radu (on debut) and Muslera kept their teammates alive. Oxygen arrives on 34′, thanks to Kolarov, who restores parity. Lazio goes into the locker room more serene and the second half is a different story. The game takes off, Rossi gets the changes right, and Rocchi, at 62′, two minutes after taking over from a spent Rolando Bianchi, scores the winning goal. Lazio in the semifinals, waiting to know their opponent (Juve or Inter).

HISTORY – Jan. 30, 1948. In New Delhi, India, “Mahatma” Gandhi, an iconic figure of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a world-renowned politician and philosopher who was nominated five times for the Nobel Peace Prize but never received it, disappears. He devoted his entire life to issues such as racism, freedom, nonviolent struggle against British oppression of the Indian people, leading them to independence. His ideas influenced pacifist and human and civil rights movements throughout the century. He was gunned down by Hindu fanatic Nathuram Godse with three gunshots as he and his two great-granddaughters went to the Biria House garden for the customary 5 p.m. ecumenical prayer.

SPORT – Jan. 30, 1976. Cristian Brocchi, former Italian midfielder and European and World Champion with the Milan shirt, was born in Milan. He arrived at Lazio in the summer of 2008, staying for five years until the day of the painful decision to hang up his boots. In the capital, Brocchi played 128 games, including 111 in Serie A, scoring three goals and lifting two Italian Cups and an Italian Super Cup to the sky. Also born today, but in 1986, is Lucas Biglia, former Lazio captain and former Milan player.
