Napoli-Cagliari, when the last day will be played: the official decision of the Lega Calcio

When will the last round of this league be played? Ongoing chaos in the League Board with quarrel among participants: official decision arrives

It has been an agitated hour to learn the outcome of the Serie A League’s council meeting related to the dates of the last day of the championship. What is clearly causing discussion is the doubt related to the day Napoli and Inter must take the field. The two clubs are still vying to win the Scudetto with 90 minutes to go, with the Azzurri ahead by one point after yesterday’s draws against Parma and Lazio.

After an initial adjournment due to an argument between managers within the board, a final decision has been reached on the date of the long-awaited 38th day. At least for the two teams in the title race, the designated day for awarding the title has been set. It was a choice that caused debate, and not a little, for numerous reasons.

The adjournment led the board to restart at 11:00 a.m., with disparity between the initial wishes of Napoli and Inter. The Nerazzurri would have liked to play the match on Thursday, then take the field for the eventual playoff no later than May 27. Having at least four days away from the final against PSG.

On the other hand, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis reportedly pushed to play on Friday, having the chance to avoid such an important match on a midweek day. Complicating matters, however, is a nationwide public transport strike on Friday itself.

Despite this impediment, the Serie A League has determined that Napoli-Cagliari and Como-Inter will be played on Friday, May 23 at 8:45 p.m. Both the date and time of the two matches are official.

Napoli e Inter, scelta la location dell’eventuale spareggio

The hypothesis of a play-off between Napoli and Inter also remains alive, though difficult to achieve. If the Azzurri lose to Cagliari and the Nerazzurri draw with Como, the two teams would find themselves tied on points in the standings.

At that point, one last game would have to be played, which would amount to a direct clash between the two clubs. The date set is Monday, May 26. The venue for the challenge has also been decided: the Olimpico in Rome. Making the announcement was the president of the Lega Serie A, Ezio Maria Simonelli:

“According to the regulations, it should be played in Milan, but of course it can’t be. Rome would be the only possible venue.”

The capital, then, would host the eventual decisive match of this championship. A scenario, as mentioned, highly unlikely because of the way the standings have developed.
