Calvarese: “Both penalties awarded by Sozza to Roma are correct.”

According to former referee Gianpaolo Calvarese, the two penalties awarded last Sunday by referee Simone Sozza in favor of Roma that allowed the Giallorossi to beat Udinese 1-2 at the “Bluenergy Stadium” were correct and fair.

Below are the reasons given by Calvarese himself:

FIRST PENALTY – “The first penalty was due to a hand foul by Kabasele. The ball travels slowly, the defender’s right arm is wide, it is almost at shoulder level; Kabasele with his intervention interrupts the play of Pellegrini, who wanted to regain possession of the ball that was going behind him. Penalty corrected.”

SECOND PENALTY – “Also right was the second penalty kick, awarded for a foul intervention by goalkeeper Sava against El Shaarawy. While on live coverage the direction of the ball suggested that it was the goalkeeper who hit it, instead the replay shows that El Shaarawy caught the ball and was then hit by the goalkeeper. In these situations it really matters who gets to the ball first, as it is the goal of both players.”
