The coach turned down AC Milan out of respect for Inter Milan: the decision was painful to inevitable, the announcement was a few hours ago

Barring resounding twists and turns, Milan will start (again) from scratch in June. The season that is about to end has been a total failure, and this judgment will not change with the eventual victory of the Coppa Italia with Bologna: it is not a trophy that can shift the balance much. What happened in the league is sensational: Milan is ninth in the standings after investing more than 100 million in the last two soccer market sessions and was eliminated from the Champions League by less than Dinamo Zagreb and then Feyenoord: inexcusable.
So we start again with a new project and a new coach. This time last year, Stefano Pioli’s farewell after five years was already decided: his was a great course with a Scudetto win and a Champions League semifinal, only to collapse. Yet, the Pioli cycle should not have even begun.
Retroscena Spalletti-Milan, perché disse no
It was September 2019 when, after only six matches, the Milan of Maldini, Boban and Massara decided to immediately exonerate Marco Giampaolo. Bad results yes but also a general management of the team and communication that had not convinced the management. To replace him, the first idea was certainly not Pioli, who arrived only as an alternative: the name at the top of the club’s thoughts was Luciano Spalletti.

The current Italy head coach had just taken Inter back to the Champions League before being replaced by Antonio Conte. With the Nerazzurri there was even an agreement for a severance package since the contract was still in place but in the end the deal fell through. After so many years, Spalletti decided to tell the truth and explain why he decided to refuse. He did so in his book, “My no to Milan was a painful decision, not an easy one to make. I did not feel like going to Milan so as not to disrespect my old Inter management and not to disrespect the Inter fans.”
No problems of an economic nature then, nor of severance: Spalletti did not want to betray the fans of Inter, a team he had left only a few months earlier. A resounding Sliding Door for the recent history of the Italian league: if the coach had gone to Milan, we would never have seen Pioli’s Scudetto and perhaps not even Napoli’s Scudetto a year later. It had to be this way, evidently.
