Roma, the (s)favorites for the bench

The race for Roma’s bench is becoming increasingly intricate. Among the names at the top of the list of favourites, according to information from major sports newspapers and especially Sky Sport, are two well-known profiles: Stefano Pioli and Cesc Fabregas. However, both seem far from easily released.

Let’s start with Pioli: the former AC Milan coach, who is linked to Al Nassr with a contract until 2026 with an option for a further year, receives a salary twice as much as he did at Milan, with a figure of around 12 million euros annually. A link that heavily distances him from an immediate return to Serie A, at least in the short term.

Different, but equally binding, is the case of Cesc Fabregas. The former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea champion is not only the technical face of Como, but has also become a partner in the club, thus tying himself to the long-term project. “We are planning the future with him,” assured the Lombard club’s ds. Como has an ambitious project (in the summer it will make big investments, and from next year it will aim to enter Europe) in which Fabregas has totally immersed himself.

The third name that has returned to Roma’s attention does not seem to be as attractive either: Francesco Farioli, currently at Ajax. An up-and-coming coach much appreciated by Ghisolfi, but who has already cashed in on an excellent critique. Claudio Ranieri a few weeks ago ruled out his profile as a suitable candidate for the Giallorossi bench, clearly stating that he was never contacted.

Meanwhile, high-profile, unemployed profiles remain ignored (by the media). Such is the case with Roberto Mancini, a technician liked by Friedkin’s ownership and currently free after his experience with the Saudi national team. The same goes for coaches valued by Claudio Ranieri, such as Massimiliano Allegri and Maurizio Sarri, both on the market and waiting for a new challenge. Those directly involved have dryly denied contact with Roma, but this means little: the Friedkins, used to working under the radar, put absolute secrecy first.
