Cerci reveals, “At Atletico Madrid unwillingly. I could have stayed at Toro.”

Alessio Cerci is one of the greatest what ifs in the history of Toro and beyond. The former 1987 class striker hung up his boots in 2023, ending his career at Arezzo.

Cerci made some statements to the Calcio Selvaggio podcast, hosted by Sandro Sabatini. The former AC Milan player talked about his transfer from Torino to Atletico Madrid in the 2014 summer soccer market. Cerci (after a 35-game, 13-goal, 11-assist season) left the Granata shirt on the last day of negotiations, forcing Toro to find a replacement in extremis. The club’s choice fell on Amauri. A last-minute purchase on the eve of an important season for Toro, given the Granata’s return to Europe.

In hindsight, it is likely that Alessio Cerci would have continued to wear the Torino jersey for at least another year. It was the 2014/2015 season, Toro had clinched Europa League qualification, and the Granata people were buzzing for a return to the European stage.

A big contribution to European qualification came from the goals of Cerci and Immobile, both of whom were sold in the summer market window. Ciro Immobile said goodbye to the Mole to move to Borussia Dortmund. Alessio Cerci decided to espouse the cause of Atletico Madrid, fresh from winning the Spanish La Liga. The former AC Milan and Arezzo player bitterly recalled that transfer: “At the time I had the chance to stay at Toro. I had several negotiations that did not go well, however. Atletico is a great club however, knowing Italian soccer well, my idea was to continue in Italy. I went against my will.”

Vanoli sfida il suo passato

A Torino Eljif Elmas è rinato.
