Torino, return to 3-man defense didn’t work out

Nella sfida del Maradona il tecnico ha riproposto la difesa a tre dal 1′ per la prima volta da fine dicembre, ma non ha ottenuto risultati

Torino failed to make a splash, and on Maradona night they had to play second fiddle to the great celebration of Napoli, which returned to solo first place in the standings. The granata failed to put on the performance they would have liked, overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of Conte’s players and the drive of all the fans. Yet Vanoli had tried to surprise his old master, reintroducing from the first minute a three-man defense for the first time since last December: a move, however, that did not bring the desired results.

La mossa di Vanoli

Coco, Maripan, Masina: the Varese coach tried to counter Napoli’s attacking trident formed by Politano, Lukaku and Spinazzola in this way, opting for triple man-marking, but failed. Perhaps it was due to lack of habit, perhaps due to the overwhelming power of the opponents, but in any case it was noticeable right from the start how the rearguard got into trouble over and over again. Maripan tried to save himself by coming out of the confrontation with Lukaku well overall, while the other two struggled mightily. Especially Coco, who for the umpteenth time had no small specific weight in the goals conceded. It was a bad night for the former Las Palmas, a negative protagonist especially in the 1-0 goal.

E ora?

Given what was shown yesterday and the path of the last period, at this point it seems unlikely that Vanoli will be able to reconfirm this system of play even against Venice. The goal yesterday was to try to surprise Conte, while next week will certainly change everything.

Paolo Vanoli, head coach of Torino FC, looks on prior to the Serie A football match between Torino FC and Empoli FC.
