Roma has no intention of stopping. The gobbo shot in Milan signed by Soulè still keeps alive the hopes of achieving a feat, that of reaching the Europe that counts after a nightmarish start to the season. And to think that on the eve of the San Siro match, the state of the Giallorossi’s psychophysical form did not allow who knows what dreams of glory.
But this is where Ranieri’s stroke of genius comes out: the coach invents the right formation that surprises Inter and gives Roma liveliness and unpredictability. Inzaghi’s team immediately understands that the match would be tough: Shomurodov next to Dovbyk gives less points of reference to the Nerazzurri rearguard, Soulè’s shift to the right creates upsets, with Dimarco clearly struggling.
The goal of Mati, a fast-rising talent, gives even more confidence to Roma, which sniffs out a feat. The team takes courage and the players on the field help each other, fighting side by side on every ball. In the middle of the field Konè returns to being the footballer admired with France and in his first months in the Giallorossi, and the difference can be seen.
Roma played well against an Inter team in obvious decline and came close to doubling the score repeatedly. The chances, both potential and concrete, piled up as the minutes passed: Cristante and Shomurodov in the first half, Pellegrini, Pisilli and Dovbyk in the second half showed lack of lucidity in the last meters, missing convenient restarts or close-range conclusions.
Inter miraculously stayed afloat, but offensively produced very little. The Nerazzurri’s assaults over the ninety minutes prove inconsistent, thanks to the absence of Thuram and an impregnable Giallorossi defense: the trio Celik-Mancini-Ndicka and an always alert Svilar guarantee Roma a well-deserved clean sheet and yet another Ranieran-style short-muscled victory.
San Siro, without Roma fans, falls silent. Inter cashes in its third consecutive defeat and seriously risks being left high and dry after having cradled the dream of the triplete. Roma, on the other hand, takes home a very heavy victory that gives great enthusiasm and conviction to the team ahead of the upcoming direct clashes that will decide the season.
The 18th consecutive useful result may not be enough for Ranieri’s boys: today it’s Bologna and Lazio’s turn, who by winning would put the Giallorossi back behind with one game to spare at the end of the season. To leave any hope open, they need to start dropping points up front.
