Walter Sabatini gave an interview to Il Tempo where he talked about Roma and beyond. The former Giallorossi director dwelt in particular on the work of coach Ranieri and the Champions League race. This is an excerpt of his words:
Sunday is Inter v Roma, what kind of match is it for her?
“Inter is a big regret but Roma is something different.”
Meaning?
“It was my contractual mistake, a wrong choice in my professional life for which there is only regret. Rome is a completely different feeling, of completeness, affection, familiarity. They are two clubs for which I spend myself and cheer.”
One adjective to describe Ranieri’s work?
“Prodigious. The assumptions were different: with De Rossi things were improving but Roma was coming off a highly negative season had started badly this season so getting such a struggling team going again was very difficult. He did a capital job, formidable.”
What is your idea of Ranieri’s role since June? Even in his time there was talk of advisors….
“When I was at Roma there was no adviser. Claudio has an enormous football sensibility and experience so he will know for himself what choices to make. The important thing is that they let him do it, because an advisor from Ranieri cannot be left there, it has to be a decision. And it is to be hoped that this decision will be endorsed. It is inevitable that if he is not listened to he will take other paths, it is only fair.”
Do Dovbyk’s difficulties, with due differences between the two strikers, remind you of Dzeko’s first year in Rome?
“No. Dzeko did poorly in his first season because he was not scoring goals, but he had the movements of the striker so much so that he then scored more than 100 goals. Dovbyk still has to internalize the right movements and also the first contact with the ball which is not always perfect. But I’ve seen him make some promising plays, even in support of teammates who come running.”
What do you think of Ghisolfi?
“To me he seems to be working well. At first he was too marginal, he never appeared and spoke little. Gradually he started to put his face in, he follows players at the international level, these are important signs, of operativeness and courage. He will grow a lot in the environment but it will also depend on which coach comes in.”
What does he hope for Roma?
“I strongly hope that it can return to the Champions League. A club like Roma cannot not make the Champions League. It is a fierce wish, I can’t stand the idea of it not participating, especially with this bewitching format. Roma has to make the Champions League.”
