Inter v Roma, news on postponement: something never seen before could happen

Inter v Roma is one of the challenges postponed for Pope Francis’ funeral scheduled for next Saturday, now it’s chaos in the calendar: when the match will be made up

The sad passing of Pope Francis has also generated a domino effect on the conduct of the Serie A championship. The matches scheduled for “Pasquetta” and valid for the 33rd day of the championship have all been postponed until tomorrow, Wednesday, April 23. But the decision not to play the Monday matches did not remain the only one.

Some matches in the 34th round of Serie A, the one scheduled for next weekend, will also undergo some upsets. This is clearly linked to the funeral of Pope Francis, which will take place on Saturday, April 26. News that will condition and not a little what will be the organization of the next round of the championship.

The most logical solution (and also the one that seems to be the League Serie A’s favorite at the moment) would be to simply slip the match to the next day. And here a proposal is also emerging that would be unique so far in Inter’s season, but it still lacks officialdom.

And here is the question that many have been asking. Why is a match postponed in Milan for an event scheduled in Rome? Simple: because all Law Enforcement will rightly be diverted to the Pope’s funeral, and so playing the matches as well would create a not insignificant public order issue.

Inter-Roma, caos nel calendario dei nerazzurri: quando si giocherà il match

Three challenges will be postponed: Como-Genoa, Inter-Roma and Lazio-Parma. Precisely those on Saturday. Slipping the first of these will have fewer repercussions. Both teams are practically safe and play very little in this season finale.

Moreover, with no cups of any kind, the match could be made up at any time. More complex is the issue related to Lazio, the club most involved in the postponement talk, since the Pope’s funeral will take place in Rome itself. The hypothesized day to make it up is Monday, April 28.

Finally, there is Inter. Postponing the Nerazzurri’s game could completely upset the Serie A calendar and the Scudetto race. First, Inter could find itself playing no longer before Napoli, but more importantly, the right fit for Inzaghi’s team will be extremely complicated.

Inter, which will play tomorrow, April 23, in the Coppa Italia semifinal return match against AC Milan, will also be engaged on April 30 with Barcelona, on May 3 with Verona, on May 6 again with the Blaugrana and on May 11 with Torino. In case of a win against Milan, the Coppa Italia final on May 14 must also be played, then then the challenge with Lazio on May 18 of the same month.

Impossible, therefore, to find until then a useful date to make up the game against Roma. The earliest could be May 21, on a Wednesday, four days before the last league match against Como. Which, while it would allow Inter to arrive with a week’s rest to the first leg challenge against Barcelona, would concentrate 3 matches in 7 days in Serie A, all potentially decisive for the Scudetto and two of them against Roma.

A disadvantage, but perhaps also an advantage. Roma today is still playing for an important slice of the European race, but in a month’s time that may no longer be the case. At the same time, an asterisk present until 2 games from the end of Serie A would evidently condition Inter’s championship and also Napoli’s, with an increasingly high playoff risk.

Ipotesi rinvio a Domenica: l’Inter potrebbe giocare alle 12.30 per la prima volta

The alternative hypothesis, which has grown in recent hours, is that Inter will play against Roma as early as the day after the postponement, that is, Sunday, April 27. By now the decision seems made, all that would be missing is the officialdom.

The times of the matches remain to be decided, because the others would also be made up on Sunday (except for Lazio, which would precisely slip to Monday, for geographical reasons). The hypothesis that is gaining momentum in these hours is that Inter-Roma will be played on Sunday, April 27, at 12:30 p.m. And that would be quite a novelty: in fact, Inter has never played a lunch match this season, and it would be the first time ever.

A solution that seems the wisest to avoid completely conditioning the continuation of the season, with such high stakes. Last chance, should Milan beat Inter in the Coppa Italia, would be to settle Inter v Roma on May 14. An official decision will come in the next few hours.

Il cavillo regolamentare: all’Inter fa molto più comodo giocare il 21 maggio

To be fair, Inter could gain more than one advantage if the challenge against Roma is moved to May 21 instead of being played on Sunday, April 27.

The first benefit would be a physical one: postponing the match would allow Inzaghi’s team to rest ahead of the Champions League semifinal against Barcelona, scheduled just three days later. A valuable margin for recovery, especially at such a busy time of the season.

But there is also a regulatory aspect that is not secondary. Bastoni and Mkhitaryan, both disqualified, would still miss a match: facing Verona first would mean serving the penalty there and then having them available for Roma, a match that could prove decisive for the Scudetto.

An advantageous solution, certainly, but one that has ignited debate among fans and insiders. For some it would be an elegant way around the rules, for others just clever management of the calendar.
