Milan sporting director’s search continues: words on Maldini’s departure are harsh

The beginning of the end is June 2023. Milan, after a Scudetto, a Champions League semifinal, and a very clear future path, suddenly decides to send off Paolo Maldini and, along with him, Frederic Massara. The two managers had managed to bring the Rossoneri back to the top after a difficult year, and they had done it painstakingly, with shrewd, far-sighted choices and extraordinary insights. Since Giorgio Furlani took over the management of the sports area, the decline began. Which then found its highest expression this season with ninth place in the standings, exclusion from the Champions League and a technical project built without head or tail.
The consequences of the bad work in society have inevitably spilled over onto the field, and the results are a demonstration of this, as was widely expected. Now, after two years, Furlani has decided to insert the figure of the sporting director again and is carrying out a real casting, as one would do to choose the main character of a film or to hire an employee. First Paratici, then Tare, now D’Amico: confusion reigns supreme, still.
Milan, Maldini e l’errore fatale
The decision to remove Maldini and Massara was the absolute worst of the RedBird management. Even worse, then, was the decision not to replace them with managers of equal or greater competence. Now the attempt to patch it up, but it will not be enough, especially if this crazy idea of the working group and shared choices goes on. Inserting a sports director equal to the situation is correct, but what will be his role?

Also questioning this lack of clarity of duties was journalist Xavier Jacobelli, who analyzed the situation with great lucidity and then came to the most important concept: “The fatal mistake was to dismiss Maldini and Massara in an abrupt and stinging manner,” he told the microphones of Sky Sport. Fatal and unfortunately irreparable mistake: it is impossible to think of a return of Maldini with this ownership, while Massara has already been the sporting director of Rennes for a few years.
Thus, there is no great optimism for the future of Milan, even with the inclusion of the sporting director who, as mentioned, risks being just one more piece. Instead, he should be an added value, a centralizer of technical choices: D’Amico and Tare are both good profiles, but it is necessary to support their ideas and choices, without any kind of interference. Starting with the first piece: the coach. He must be the one to choose him, and no one else.
