Accadde oggi 22 gennaio

LAZIO – Jan. 22, 1950. Sperone-coached Lazio pays a visit to Carver’s very strong (and leading) Juventus at the Stadio Comunale in Turin. The Bianconeri are the same as ever and play wonderfully, but the visiting lineup has nothing to envy. On the contrary. Solidity in defense, dynamism in midfield and pragmatism in attack-the perfect recipe. In the 18th minute, Cecconi hits a glaring post with Viola beaten: the goal is in the air. In fact, in the 20th minute, Flamini put the Biancocelesti ahead, served right by the Verona midfielder, who fakes the shot and offers “El Flaco” an easy tap-in. Time eight minutes and the Argentine oriundo doubles: snapped on the offside line, he beats the Bianconeri extreme defender with a delightful touch, slow but angular. The Piedmont crowd booed their favorites and sportingly applauded Lazio.

The Bianconeri pride comes out in the distance, but already before the end of the first half (in the 38th minute) Hansen puts his team back in the game, with a bolide-masterpiece from long distance. In the second half, Juve raises its center of gravity and attacks head-on, but the guests hold their own, until the 76th minute, when Alzani lands Marino in the box. Penalty kick. It looks like a mockery for the biancocelesti, but luck, you know, helps the bold. And so does Mari, who kicks it out. Lazio routed the Comunale and returned to Rome with two points obtained thanks to heart, legs and a lot of cheekiness.

HISTORY – January 22, 1944. At 02:45, the Allied army initiates a massive military operation known as the “Shingle” (i.e., “beach pebbles”): the Anzio landing is one of the most painful events of World War II, with thousands of casualties on both sides. The operation came about as a result of the stalling of the ground offensive and the difficulties of occupying Monte Cassino. Thus, the Italian Campaign, underwent a change: on D-Day dated, precisely, Jan. 22, a convoy of 374 ships landed the I British Division between Torri Caldara and San Lorenzo and III between Nettuno and Torre Asturia. Command of operations was given to General John P. Lucas, but triumph would not come until June 4.

SPORT – January 22, 1911. Also known as the “Temple of Football,” Italy’s first stadium and first ever “owned” stadium was born, the “Campo di Via del Piano” (today “Luigi Ferraris”), inaugurated with the match between Genoa and Inter, which ended 1-0. A capacity of twenty thousand spectators and a complicated location, near the Bisagno stream, a true masterpiece of engineering. Adjacent to the newborn playing field, there was “La Cajenna,” the sports field of Andrea Doria, owned by Marchese Musso Piantelli, a partner of Genoa, for which, the “grandmother” of the current Sampdoria, paid the red-blues 1200 Lire until 1926. After various vicissitudes, the ground returned under the aegis of the “Grifone,” on which he erected the Gradinata Nord, a place that soon became sacred to all its fans.
