Widmer: “I dream of facing Udinese in a European competition.”

Former Juventus man, in Udine for five seasons with 142 appearances, 5 goals and 18 assists, Swiss right back and captain of Mainz Germans Silvan Widmer spoke to the microphones of colleagues from Il Messaggero Veneto for an interview. Here is an excerpt of his statements.

THE ARRIVAL AT UDINE – “I was happy to land at a club that had always managed to enhance young talent. An offer that I honestly did not expect since I was playing in the Swiss Serie B. I still remember the first months the work I was doing with coach Guidolin and his collaborators. We youngsters, on Thursdays, would undergo a second training session, which was aimed at expanding our tactical knowledge. I was trying to use this opportunity to learn as much as possible. If I look back, I am happy with what I did, because in Udine I learned a lot and improved a lot in this respect.”

ORIGINAL SERIES A DEBUT AGAINST INTER’S NEXT OVERSARY – “It was a very difficult match, because we lost 3-0. From a personal point of view, I was proud to have made my debut in Serie A. I was still very young and on my flank, the right, I was facing Nagatomo: between me and him it was a hard-fought test, but I remember winning all the aerial duels.”

DI NATALE’S REMINDER – “Totò was too strong. His technique was extraordinary. When he received the ball in the box, we knew we could already go and celebrate his goal.”

UDINESE IN THE HEART – “I returned to Friuli last year for summer vacation. I took a walk through the center of Udine, it was exciting to go through the places in which I lived. I also went to drink espresso in the coffee shop I frequented at the time. Here, I miss Italian coffee, I like it too much. Then also the life, the food. My wife and I were really good in Udine. I would have stayed in Friuli, but after five years I felt like taking on a new professional challenge. For this I will always be grateful to the club, which gave me the opportunity to have a new experience. Not to mention that it was thanks to Udinese that I grew as a footballer.”

CURRENT UDINESE – “I see that the team is going strong and I hope it can return to Europe. In the club now, I only know Gokhan Inler, with whom I played in the national team. He was a great footballer and is a beautiful person.”

EUROPEAN DREAM AGAINST THE BIANCONERI – “It would be great to play a cup match at the Bluenergy Stadium. I am connected to the Bianconeri, I will always be a fan of them.”
