The transfer of Sandro Tonali is still a gaping wound for Milan fans. It was especially so this week with the Newcastle midfielder first dominating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, winning the trophy, and then with yesterday’s performance in the Italy shirt against Germany. In addition to the goal, scored among other things under his own curve, he was stratospheric for 90′, holding the Azzurri’s midfield in his hands.
These two matches have unleashed the fans on social media, who in these hours have put in their sights the management and ownership that, in June 2023, after sending away Paolo Maldini (the one who would probably have opposed the sale) also thought well of giving up the one player who on the field gave that extra something needed to build a winning team. It was said at the time that 58 million was too much to refuse, but two years later, even from an economic point of view, the operation turned out to be disadvantageous.

Everyone knows what happened to Tonali shortly after he left AC Milan: the betting case forced him (rightly) into a one-year disqualification. The Italian midfielder has returned to the field this season and it seems that that long layoff was never there; on the contrary: he has managed to improve his performance and output without playing, an unmistakable sign of the boy’s technical and tactical greatness.

Newcastle, which waited for him for 12 long months, now enjoys him and, more importantly, also enjoys the growth in his economic value: bought for nearly 60 million, he is now worth twice that. Yes, the English club will not listen to offers below 100 million from a potential buyer. Which will come, inevitably, in the summer: the English biggies and, why not, even Real Madrid and Barcelona could come forward.
Tonali reached a resounding level and Milan, with his transfer, only lost out: lost quality, lost soul, lost money. Without a shadow of a doubt, the sale of Tonali was the biggest mistake of the RedBird era along with the departure of Maldini and Massara: it is not at all a coincidence that, since that moment, Milan has foundered until reaching this season in which it risks making the en-plein with exclusion from the next Champions League after four years in a row.
