Milan, the truth about the coach eight months later: ‘There was an internal problem’

Finally the truth about what happened in June 2024: the coach came out of the closet, here’s what happened

Last summer was marked by the eventful post-Stefano Pioli. In everyone’s eyes, Milan’s choice was very simple: florid coaches were free, primarily Antonio Conte and Roberto De Zerbi. In short, making a decision seemed rather easy, but instead the management, and thus Furlani, Moncada and Ibrahimovic, made it much more complicated. In the end, it fell to Paulo Fonseca, a coach certainly of depth, both technical and human, who was not what the team needed at that specific moment.

And indeed, the Portuguese has found no small amount of difficulty, and his faults in this regard are very limited. But before getting around to signing the former Lille man, Milan had taken another one: it was Julen Lopetegui, formerly of Real Madrid and Spain, but at some point the negotiations broke down. So suddenly, when everything seemed done. In those days there was a real popular uprising by the fans against the Spaniard’s arrival, and perhaps this influenced the change of mind. Today, several months later, it is Lopetegui himself who has come out in the open about this affair.

Lopetegui e il mancato arrivo al Milan, clamorosa rivelazione

The Spaniard had already spoken about this recently to Gazzetta dello Sport and today, interviewed by AS, he strongly reiterated it, adding, however, another interesting detail. Lopetegui comments on Arrigo Sacchi’s recent statements criticizing AC Milan for changing his mind. “He surprised me and I thank him, he wanted to say that the decisions of a professional cannot be changed by a party that is not professional,” explains the former West Ham coach.

But why did Lopetegui ultimately not coach Milan? The Spanish coach explained, “It was difficult and strange to understand. It was not something with me, but an internal problem.” Thus, according to his statements, the decision not to hire the Spaniard again was dictated by an internal feud, probably the same one that is there today regarding future choices. Ibrahimovic on one side, Giorgio Furlani on the other.

To have prevailed, once again, despite the last disastrous years, will still be the CEO. Lopetegui’s story now represents the past, but his words are a fairly clear snapshot of the difficulties Milan is experiencing today from the inside at the club. Difficulties that then inevitably invade the field and the results as well.
