Green light from Senate Culture Committee: advertising on betting and gambling returns

The Senate Culture Commission approved the amendment to Article 9 of Decree Law 87/2018, paving the way for the return of betting and gaming advertising, including sponsorship by betting operators. This is a first step toward lifting the ban imposed six years ago, with clear economic benefits for sports clubs, which will once again be able to rely on these forms of financing.

The resolution, while committing the government, is not binding: a subsequent piece of legislation will be needed to make the change effective. However, the political signal is clear and has found broad support, with the opposition lining up against the measure.

According to Senator Paolo Marcheschi (Fratelli d’Italia), rapporteur of the act, the goal is to support the soccer sector by gathering proposals from all stakeholders. One of the key points is to attract private capital for the renovation of sports facilities, which are often obsolete, both for top-level facilities – such as stadiums ahead of Euro 2032 – and for smaller facilities, where thousands of amateur and youth matches are played every week.

The change could therefore represent a turning point for Italian soccer, allowing clubs to benefit from new advertising revenue and encouraging investment in sports infrastructure.
