Bonora: “Runjaic has found right system of play: now he lacks a full-back to get off the ground!”

Colleagues from Il Messaggero Veneto interviewed former Udinese defender and captain Franco Bonora ahead of the upcoming challenge at home to Lecce. It is a double ex of the challenge since Bonora was a historic captain of Udinese returned to the A league in 1979, but he also played with the Salento giallorossi ending his career with the Lecce jersey playing in Serie B from 1979 to 1981. This is an excerpt of his statements.

LACKING A PUSHING BACK – “Solet reminds me of Fellet, and Thauvin that creative Vriz. Runjaic has found the right system of play to make Udinese grow and revive, but to get off the ground we need a push full-back like our Mariano Riva was.”

THE SOLET-FELLET COMPARISON – “I compared Solet to Fellet because the Frenchman appears almost always insurmountable, just as Fulvio was. In those days we played with the libero, a role played by one of the two centerbacks in the four-man defense. Fanesi and I were the two markers on the opposing forwards who directed the attackers and played in the one-on-one like Gasperini’s Atalanta does today. And if anyone passed, the unsurpassable Fellet would take care of him. In terms of physical structure, power and recoveries Solet really reminds me of him.”

THAUVIN – “The Frenchman is playing really well and he is a real catalyst because he can handle the ball like no one else and he goes to the conclusion, but above all he doesn’t make useless passes that are an end in themselves because he wants to make an impact with his flair. He has a very technical left foot and I think Thauvin finds absolute advantage in playing in this 4-4-2 because he is free to range and fold at will and not on command. In this interpretation, too, he reminds me of our Vriz who was the fancy left-footed trequartista who played from midfield forward, with Gigi Delneri manning the midfield with the same recognizable authority as Karlstrom.”

NEEDS A THIRD-BACK WHO ALSO KNOWS HOW TO ATTACK – “A push fullback. Kamara does his, but playing with four, the fullback also has to push and support offensive bursts. Here, let’s say Mariano Riva was our Theo Hernandez back then and someone like him I would see very well to get Udinese off the ground.”
