Yakin’s substitutes make the difference again as Switzerland overturns Canada and secures first place. Promise David’s late strike is not enough for Marsch’s side.
Switzerland continues to prove itself one of the most dangerous teams of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After dismantling Bosnia and Herzegovina, Murat Yakin’s side defeated Canada 2-1 in Vancouver and finished top of Group B with seven points, guaranteeing a potentially favorable Round of 32 matchup against one of the best third-placed teams.
For Canada, a draw would have been enough to secure first place and remain on home soil for the knockout stage, but the Swiss exploded immediately after halftime.
The breakthrough came only forty seconds into the second half. Johan Manzambi, already decisive against Bosnia, slipped behind the defense and squared perfectly for Ruben Vargas, who calmly finished past Crépeau.
Switzerland kept pushing and doubled the lead in the 57th minute. This time Embolo turned provider, finding Manzambi inside the box, and the young attacker made no mistake, continuing his extraordinary World Cup campaign.
Canada finally reacted midway through the second half. Nathan-Dylan Saliba produced a brilliant individual move before delivering a perfect pass for Promise David, who had come off the bench and beat Kobel to cut the deficit.
The hosts searched desperately for an equalizer but Switzerland remained composed, relying on the experience of Xhaka, Akanji and Freuler to see out the result.
Yakin’s men close the group unbeaten with seven points and considerable momentum, while Canada advances as runner-up with four points and will face the second-place finisher from Group A in Los Angeles.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s victory over Qatar means Barbarez’s side also reaches four points, but Canada progresses thanks to a superior goal difference.
