Montella Proud Despite Turkey’s World Cup Exit: “I’ve Never Seen Anything Like It” (VIDEO)

After a heartbreaking elimination, Vincenzo Montella defended his players and insisted Turkey deserved far more from a tournament campaign defined by missed chances and cruel setbacks.

Turkey’s FIFA World Cup 2026 journey is effectively over, but head coach Vincenzo Montella believes his side leaves the tournament with its head held high despite failing to translate dominant performances into results.

The Italian manager, who had publicly criticized sections of the Turkish media before the decisive clash against Paraguay for creating unnecessary pressure around the national team, was left frustrated by what he described as an unprecedented run of bad fortune.

“We produced two performances of the highest level,” Montella said after the defeat. “In those two matches we attempted 65 shots and failed to score, while conceding very little. Yet almost everything we allowed ended up in our net.”

The former Italy international admitted he had never experienced anything comparable during his long career in football.

“Honestly, this has never happened to me in 35 years in football,” he explained. “It’s obvious that destiny was not on our side in these matches. But no one can question our spirit, our commitment or our desire to fight. The team gave everything until the final second.”

Turkey entered the World Cup with genuine ambitions of reaching the knockout stages, boasting one of the youngest and most technically gifted squads in the tournament. Instead, a combination of inefficiency in front of goal and ruthless punishment from opponents turned promising performances into painful defeats.

Montella reserved special praise for his players, insisting their efforts deserved a different outcome.

“I feel deeply sorry for the Turkish people, who had high expectations and big ambitions,” he said. “I’m sorry for the Federation and for our president, who supported us at every moment. But above all, I’m sorry for the players because they left everything on the pitch.”

The Turkish coach was also asked about criticism regarding the timing of his substitutions, particularly after his side fell behind despite controlling large stretches of the match.

“We replaced Yılmaz with another striker and later added one more attacker,” Montella explained. “People can debate tactics or whether a forward should have been ten meters higher or lower on the field. That’s legitimate. But at one point in the first half we were losing 1–0 to a team that had practically never shot on target. If someone can explain the logic behind that, I’m here ready to learn.”

Despite the disappointment, Montella refused to blame his squad and instead believes they demonstrated qualities that go beyond football.

“If we want to be objective, I have nothing to reproach this team for,” he concluded. “On the contrary, I think these players showed everyone values that are even more important.”

Turkey will close its World Cup campaign against the United States in Los Angeles, a match that carries little significance in the standings but offers Montella’s team an opportunity to leave North America with a performance worthy of the effort and resilience shown throughout the tournament.
