A second-minute goal from PSV midfielder Ismael Saibari proves enough to send Morocco to the top of the standings and leave Scotland facing a decisive final match.
Morocco took a significant step toward the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Scotland 1-0 in a tense and tactical Group C encounter.
A lightning-fast strike from Ismael Saibari after just two minutes proved decisive in a match that offered few clear-cut chances and was largely dictated by Morocco’s defensive organization.
The victory moves the Atlas Lions to four points after two matches and puts them in a strong position to reach the Round of 32, while Scotland remains stuck on three points after failing to build on its opening-day victory against Haiti.
Morocco wasted little time making its intentions clear.
Only two minutes had elapsed when Brahim Díaz found space between the Scottish lines and threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the penalty area. Saibari timed his run brilliantly and calmly beat Angus Gunn to score his second goal of the tournament.
The early setback forced Steve Clarke’s side to chase the game, but Scotland struggled to create meaningful opportunities against a disciplined Moroccan defense expertly marshaled by Nayef Aguerd’s replacement Riad and the experienced Achraf Hakimi.
Scott McTominay and Lewis Ferguson battled hard in midfield, while John McGinn attempted to inject creativity behind Che Adams, but Morocco rarely looked troubled.
Walid Ouahbi’s team gradually dropped deeper after taking the lead, content to absorb pressure and rely on quick transitions through Brahim Díaz and Bilal El Khannouss.
Scotland enjoyed more possession during the second half and introduced fresh attacking options, including Lyndon Dykes and Gannon-Doak, but the Tartan Army lacked the sharpness and imagination needed to unlock the Moroccan back line.
Morocco, meanwhile, remained compact and organized, comfortably protecting its advantage until the final whistle.
The result leaves Group C finely balanced heading into the final round of fixtures. Morocco now controls its own destiny, while Scotland will need a positive result in its last match to keep its World Cup hopes alive.
