USA 2-0 Australia: Americans Clinch Knockout Spot Without Pulisic as McKennie Runs the Show

Pochettino’s side secures an early ticket to the Round of 32 thanks to an own goal from Burgess and a strike from Freeman, while Australia now faces a must-win finale against Paraguay.

The United States became one of the first teams to book a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, defeating Australia 2-0 in its second Group D match and securing qualification with a game to spare.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men followed up their emphatic victory over Paraguay with another convincing performance, proving they can win even without their injured talisman Christian Pulisic. Weston McKennie orchestrated proceedings from midfield, Sergiño Dest tormented the Australian defense, and the Americans rarely looked troubled.

For Australia, it was a disappointing setback after the encouraging opening victory against Türkiye. Tony Popovic’s side struggled to cope with the pace and movement of the U.S. attack and now heads into the final matchday knowing that qualification is far from guaranteed.

The Americans wasted little time taking control.

After just eleven minutes, Folarin Balogun burst down the flank and delivered a dangerous low cross into the box. Defender Cameron Burgess attempted to clear but only succeeded in diverting the ball into his own net, handing the United States an early lead.

Australia found itself pinned back for much of the first half, unable to contain the overlapping runs of Dest and the intelligent movement of McKennie. The Socceroos offered little going forward, with Mohamed Touré and Nishan Velupillay isolated and ineffective.

The second goal arrived shortly before halftime. Following a scramble inside the penalty area, the ball fell kindly for Freeman, whose header was initially ruled out for offside before a VAR review confirmed the goal and doubled the American advantage.

Popovic reacted at the interval, introducing Jason Geria, Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda in an attempt to spark a comeback. The substitutions slightly improved Australia’s intensity, while Cristian Volpato also provided some creativity after coming on midway through the second half.

Despite the renewed energy, Australia never seriously threatened to overturn the deficit. Matt Freese remained largely untested, while the American back line, led by Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson, comfortably dealt with the few dangerous moments created by the Socceroos.

Balogun could have added a third goal after the break but squandered a clear opportunity. Fortunately for Pochettino, it mattered little.

With six points from two matches, the United States is guaranteed a place in the Round of 32 and will face Türkiye in the final group-stage game with first place at stake.

Australia, meanwhile, remains on three points and must defeat Paraguay to avoid an early exit.
