Switzerland 4-1 Bosnia and Herzegovina: Manzambi’s Brace Sends Swiss to the Top of Group B

Yakin’s substitutes change the match as Switzerland overwhelms Bosnia in the final twenty minutes after Muharemović’s red card.

Switzerland made a major statement in Group B, cruising to a 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina and moving to the top of the standings after two matches.

For more than an hour, Murat Yakin’s side struggled to break down a disciplined Bosnian defense, but a series of inspired substitutions transformed the game. Young forward Johan Manzambi emerged as the hero, coming off the bench to score twice, while Rubín Vargas also found the net in a dominant closing stretch.

Bosnia, meanwhile, paid dearly for the dismissal of Sassuolo defender Tarik Muharemović, whose red card with ten minutes remaining opened the floodgates.

The first half offered little excitement. Switzerland controlled possession and territory, with Dan Ndoye creating the best opportunities, but Nikola Vasilj repeatedly kept Sergej Barbarez’s side in the contest.

Bosnia relied mainly on long balls toward veteran striker Edin Džeko, who started for the first time in the tournament. The former Roma and Inter forward battled hard against Manuel Akanji and Nico Elvedi but rarely received enough support from his teammates. Promising youngster Alajbegović, making another appearance after a solid outing against Canada, struggled to leave his mark and was largely anonymous throughout the evening.

Yakin increased the tempo after halftime, introducing fresh legs from the bench. Ndoye continued to threaten, forcing another save from Vasilj, before the breakthrough finally arrived in the 74th minute.

Only three minutes after entering the match, Manzambi latched onto a loose ball inside the penalty area and calmly slotted home to give Switzerland a deserved lead.

Bosnia’s hopes suffered a major blow six minutes later when Muharemović was shown a straight red card, leaving Barbarez’s side with ten men for the closing stages.

Switzerland immediately capitalized on the numerical advantage. Another substitute, Vargas, doubled the lead in the 84th minute after a well-worked attacking move.

Manzambi completed his memorable cameo in the 90th minute, scoring his second goal of the night and effectively putting the game beyond doubt.

Bosnia managed to pull one back in stoppage time thanks to an excellent strike from Mahmić, but any thoughts of a comeback disappeared moments later when Granit Xhaka converted a penalty in the 96th minute to seal a comprehensive 4-1 victory.

Switzerland now sits atop Group B with four points and is in an excellent position to advance to the knockout stage. Bosnia, after taking only one point from its first two matches, will likely need a victory in its final group game to keep its World Cup hopes alive.
