Coco, the mistakes are starting to be too many: the defender still needs to grow up

Un passaggio sbagliato ha permesso al Genoa di trovare un immeritato pareggio. Per Coco non è stato però il primo errore grave

“I’m more pissed off about the mistake that led to Genoa’s goal than about the episode of the penalty not given.” The somewhat colorful phrase uttered by Samuele Ricci at the end of the match against Cagliari tells well the mood in the Torino locker room at the end of the game. Let’s be clear, the midfielder’s was not an attack on Saul Coco, whose erroneous pass initiated the 1-1 action, much less was it an accusation against his teammate. It was more an expression of regret for those two points thrown to the wind in a match that the Granata lineup would have deserved to win. The fact remains, however, that Coco’s mistake is undeniable.

Coco: tutti gli errori del campionato

Unfortunately, it is not the first one this season for the granata number 23: a week ago, against Atalanta, he had missed Djimsiti’s marking on the occasion of the goal of the momentary Atlantic lead, then he had been pardoned by the referee who had not considered a hand foul of his as a penalty (and in that case the penalty could have even been whistled). Going back in time Coco’s particularly bad performances are also recalled against Inter and against Cagliari in the first leg (complete with an own goal in the latter case) but one cannot forget the performance against Napoli with a devoured goal that could have changed the story of the match.

Acquistato per 7,5 milioni

Admittedly, Coco’s season has not been entirely negative, but he has experienced many ups and downs so far, demonstrating that he still needs to grow in order to truly become a pillar of Torino’s presumed and future. He is no longer a very young man, he is 26 years old and should be in the middle of his football maturity, however, it should not be forgotten that the defender is at his first experience in Italy and, above all, he is only in his second season in a top league: before moving to granata he had played only one year in La Liga with Las Palmas, previously he had been a protagonist only in Segunda Division.

Davide Vagnati is a great believer in his qualities, so much so that last summer he went so far as to offer 7.5 million to buy him, despite the fact that his contract was up in 2025. The dt had identified him as a replacement for Alessandro Buongiorno, but at this moment in time he certainly cannot be compared with the central player now at Napoli. Now Coco will have to be good to get out of this negative moment and resume his own path of growth: the mistakes made are already too many.
