Ranieri and the swipe at Ghisolfi: a phrase that sounds like a banshee

Claudio Ranieri let himself off the hook a bit in the last interview with a sentence that seems to be a not-so-subtle dig at the work of ds Ghisolfi

Claudio Ranieri is certainly not one to mince words. In his usual straightforward, no-nonsense style, the Giallorossi coach made statements that, between the lines, sound like a sharp rejection of the work of sporting director Florent Ghisolfi.

And if just a few days ago he had praised it for the winter operations, now his words on the summer buying campaign are anything but flattering.

Next summer will be a total revolution at Roma. Ranieri has already announced that he will leave the technical leadership by personally agreeing with a new coach, several players will say goodbye and, in all likelihood, Ghisolfi will also be questioned. Too many questionable operations, too much money spent without results up to the mark: the balance of his management, at the moment, is certainly not positive.

And it cannot be ruled out that there may be some shake-up at the management level as well. The feeling is that the Friedkins, after investing so much, want to review strategies to bring Roma back to a more competitive level. And Ranieri’s words sound almost like a coded message: those who did wrong will pay the consequences.

Now it remains to be seen who will lead Roma next season and, more importantly, who will be called upon to rebuild a more solid technical project. Certainly, Ghisolfi’s future seems to hang by a thread, and Ranieri’s jibe may be just the first sign of impending change.

La frase di Ranieri sul mercato estivo: “Soldi spesi male”

Talking about the market and ownership efforts, Ranieri pointed out that the Friedkins spent a lot, but with questionable results, “They spent a boatload of money, some might say it was misspent. I can agree with that.”

This is a heavy admission, which sounds like a direct blow to the French DS. Immediately afterwards, he wanted to clarify that he does not intend to defend anyone, pointing out that Financial Fair Play is a concrete obstacle and that Roma, in fact, has a strict salary cap that limits spending options.

The talk becomes even more interesting when Ranieri talks about missed targets, starting with Kolo Muani, who has just arrived and is making waves at Juventus. “Kolo Muani I wanted him too. The president wanted him too, but you couldn’t.” And again, “We are all good to get Walker, but we didn’t have the money and we couldn’t overrun.” In short, Roma had to give up high-level profiles because of economic management that left no room for maneuver.

But the most critical passage comes when the coach talks about the club’s overall situation: “We are sailing in a storm, but solid, because the Friedkins are solid.” A sentence that on the one hand reassures, but on the other confirms that the team is not experiencing a serene moment and that something has not worked in past strategies. And it is hard not to think that the target of his words is Ghisolfi himself, who played a key role in the summer choices.
