The frost came at the hottest time. After a standout season, Mile Svilar and Roma have yet to reach an agreement on a contract renewal. The meeting staged yesterday in the capital between the goalkeeper and the Giallorossi management ended without white smoke.
Svilar landed at Fiumicino in the morning, accompanied by his agent Vlado Lemic, the same as Luka Modric, leaving Antwerp where he was spending a few days of vacation with his wife, who is expecting. The talks with Roma executives lasted about two hours, but at the end no agreement came. The parties took time to reflect, but the distance remains significant.
The main node concerns the salary: the Belgian goalkeeper is asking for 3.5 million euros plus bonuses, even in light of his recent exploits and a status now as an undisputed starter. Roma, however, has gone as high as 2.5 million, held back by the Financial Fair Play stakes and the desire to contain the payroll.
Meanwhile, competition is growing. Svilar has ended up in the sights of several top European clubs, including Bayern Munich, Manchester United and – as of a few hours ago – Massimiliano Allegri’s AC Milan, which is looking for a new number one. The goalkeeper, however, has never hidden his desire to stay in the capital: “There will be news in the coming days and I will clarify everything, but my agent is not a problem,” he told la Repubblica.
In the meantime, within the walls of Trigoria, Claudio Ranieri is also on the move: now passed over in the role of manager, the historic Giallorossi coach is trying to mediate between the parties to avoid a breakup and reach the white smoke. No small diplomatic operation, considering that the permanence of Svilar represents one of the pillars on which Gian Piero Gasperini intends to build the new Roma project.
