Le parole di Gravina sul rifiuto di Acerbi e il Mondiale
“We must not look for alibis at this time, we have a goal on which we are all focused. Qualification is fundamental, we are aware of the difficulties we are experiencing at the moment, not only because of a few too many injuries, but also because of the fatigues that national and international championships have caused. The moment is one of difficulty, but we will hang on the great sense of pride on the part of our boys in sharing the pride that has always characterized wearing the national team jersey. This pride must generate enthusiasm in all our fans, which in 2021 led to an extraordinary and unthinkable achievement.
Together we must center this qualification that has been missing for some time. On the Acerbi issue, there is no comment, it is a personal evaluation, everyone has a sense of belonging, I do not enter into the subjective evaluations of Acerbi, I can only express regret in not being able to share Acerbi’s performance, with the understanding that as Spalletti has already pointed out we have players who can still replace him. We should not look for alibis, we all know the objective conditions. If we comment on the difficulties we forget the positive aspects. We will have to give everything, this is what we ask of the boys, at this moment they are the boys most ready for our national team.”
Sul valorizzare i giovani talenti
“We have to dispel a cliché, we produce a lot of talent, the first victory in the history of the Under-17 European Championship is proof of that. In terms of building and producing talent we are first in Europe, the problem is that in order to create the Champion you have to provide opportunities for talent. There are so many young people with great prospects who are marginalized, players who when they come in make a difference.
We don’t have the patience and courage to invest in these young people. I saw Yamal play when he was 15-16 years old, he had some shots but he was not what he is today. To become the player he is today he was used for two years in an absolute top team like Barcelona. Doué played against us in the under 17 and under 19 two years ago and I didn’t feel there was this big difference as the best players in the tournament were two Italians. We just need to have more courage in giving space to these young people.”
