One of Gian Piero Gasperini’s big hits at Atalanta last year was an exploit that demonstrated all the strength the Bergamo club had acquired in the market, and more.

Summer 2024, Scamacca is seriously injured. The next day, Atalanta, on the recommendation of its coach, accelerates for Mateo Retegui and takes him home in a little more than 24 hours, paying 25 million euros to Genoa in a deal that might have seemed a bit rushed, but no.

Mateo Retegui turned out to be the crack of Serie A. Someone who had scored seven goals the season before, including penalties, and suddenly found himself the top scorer with 25 goals and the man of records, the one who scored the most goals in a single season in Atalanta’s history.

And not only that. Now his price has practically doubled, to the delight of Percassi but not Gasperini, who has left Atalanta and finds himself looking for a center forward again.

Actually, one already has him on the roster, but his position is all to be evaluated. We are talking about Artem Dovbyk, a footballer who has had an interlocutory season this year and who could return to Spain or go to England. In fact, Roma has two center forwards. The second one is Tammy Abraham, whom Gasperini likes a lot and who could stay in the capital as a surprise to try to relaunch himself.

But by his side, instead of Dovbyk, there could be another Retegui hit. A somewhat surprise purchase, one of those that maybe goes under the radar and then turns out to be a market hit at a price that is not even too high. At least, that’s what Gasp hopes.

He already plays in Serie A, more precisely in Lecce, and answers to the name of Nikola Krstovic. The Giallorossi’s striker from Puglia could change city and jersey, but not colors, by dressing in the capital’s yellow and red.

The amount? Similar to what Atalanta paid for Retegui. Lecce would like to make 25 million euros for him, and Roma could take him home, perhaps including in the negotiation some quid pro quo that Corvino likes. Krstovic is Gasperini’s pet project this year and he will do everything to bring him to Roma, but it will not be easy, also because there is competition to be won from other Italian big names that are following him and would like to take him home.

We will see if Roma will be able to grab him and if Gasperini will be able to do with him what he did in Bergamo with Mateo Retegui. The plan is clear: find a player who has not yet fully exploded, work on him, mold him and make him decisive. A game that Gasp has always liked, and that could be the right signal to give Roma a new identity.
