Roma bench, Sarri rises

That for Roma’s bench is taking on the contours of a veritable soap opera. Amid suggestions, turnabouts, denials and twists and turns, the search for a new coach continues to hold sway, fueling fears and hopes among fans. Six months of rumors, rejections and failed attempts, in a chaos that – as Leggo writes today – makes even a Vatican conclave pale.

Throwing further fuel on the fire was, yesterday, the surprise appearance of Jose Mourinho at Fiumicino airport: an appearance that immediately ignited the imagination of those who dream of a resounding comeback, but which was promptly denied by all parties involved. Just like the fanciful Klopp hypothesis, sunk even before it took shape.

Meanwhile, the track leading to Nuno Espirito Santo also seems to have faded. It is unclear whether by Roma’s choice or by the will of the coach, who might give in to the (golden) court of Saudi Arabia. Certainly, yet another twist in a picture that remains smoky.

There is one certainty, however: Cesc Fabregas has said no. His refusal has sent the Friedkins’ plans into a tailspin, and they are now forced to consider more traditional options. Among them are two heavy names: Maurizio Sarri and Massimiliano Allegri. Both are free, but – according to their entourages – still would not be contacted. Yet, yesterday, rumors about the former Lazio coach picked up again.

However, Roma’s gaze remains open abroad as well. Among the profiles kept under observation are Adolf Hütter, now at Monaco, and the unemployed Marco Rose, formerly of Leipzig. The impression is that time is running out and that by the end of the month, after a long and chaotic gestation, a choice will finally be made. Or at least it is hoped.
