MAY 21 UPDATE – As Corriere dello Sport reports this morning, Lotito and Fabiani will propose a one-year deal for Pedro perhaps with a performance-related option, more or less the same contract that has linked the player to the club in recent years. The Spaniard will turn 38 in July and does not rule out playing until he is 40.
MAY 20 UPDATE – As reported in today’s edition of Corriere dello Sport, the appointment for the renewal of Spanish star Pedro has been set, with a contract extension until 2026 and the salary to be negotiated: today he earns 2.2 million plus bonuses, Lotito will have to decide whether to confirm the figures or spread the amount with a longer contract. The contract offer will also depend on European qualification and UEFA stakes, which require balance between expenses and revenues.
Pedro, who will turn 38 on July 28, has responded on the field with 14 goals on the season (10 in the league), professionalism and availability. He has never caused any problems and has already expressed a desire to continue at least another year, perhaps two. He admitted this to L’Équipe: “Baroni said I could play another four years… It sounds complicated! One or two, though, why not?” The idea of continuing until the age of 40 fascinates him, although he does not rule out a future experience in America, where several former teammates play. But the priority is to remain at Lazio, where he feels he is a guide and reference for younger players. “I want to support them, help them integrate,” he said.
Baroni has restored his confidence: “Pedro is a model of professionalism,” he explained. And the club also sees him in the post-career future, with Lotito and Fabiani ready to offer him a role in the club: the doors will remain open. Pedro is an asset that the biancocelesti do not want to lose.
