Vanoli and the Lecce taboo: zero wins as a player and as a coach

Nella prossima partita, Paolo Vanoli proverà a sfatare il tabù Lecce. Il tecnico del Torino non ha mai vinto né da giocatore né da allenatore

Lecce-Torino will be Paolo Vanoli’s challenge. The Toro coach has never won against the Giallorossi, either as a player or on the bench. On the pitch Vanoli has challenged the Pugliese four times, getting three draws and one defeat. On Toro’s bench, the former Venezia drew the only match he played against Lecce.

So, today’s challenge at the “Via del Mare” will have a special flavor for Paolo Vanoli. The coach will try to dispel the taboo in a complicated match. Torino has nothing more to ask from the championship. The granata occupy the 11th position in the standings and await the last two matches to end a disappointing season. Lecce, on the other hand, is in the fight to avoid relegation, and former Granata coach Giampaolo’s lineup will try to win in order to gain valuable points.

Vanoli calciatore vincente…ma non contro il Lecce

Paolo Vanoli was among the protagonists of the Parma fairytale. In the late 1990s, the Emilian club dominated in Italy and Europe, lifting several trophies. Vanoli’s trophy cabinet includes 3 cups won with the Ducali: the Uefa Cup and Coppa Italia from the 1998/1999 season and the Italian Super Cup in 2000. To these triumphs must be added the Coppa Italia of the 2000/2001 season, won by Vanoli with the Fiorentina jersey.

Many successes, but none of them against Lecce. Vanoli has challenged the Giallorossi four times, getting three draws and one defeat. The ties came in the shirts of Parma (0-0), Venezia (1-1) and Fiorentina (1-1). The knockout was on Oct. 14, 2001, when Vanoli was in Florence. At that time, Lecce beat Fiorentina 4-1. On the viola’s goal was the hand of Vanoli, who churned out the assist for Predrag Mijatovic.

Lecce-Torino, Vanoli cerca il successo da allenatore

As mentioned, as a player Vanoli failed to beat Lecce. As a coach, the rut has not changed. In the only intersection between the former Venezia and the Giallorossi club, Vanoli got a draw. On September 15, 2024, Torino and Lecce drew 0-0.

The next match staged at the “Via del mare” stadium will bring together Marco Giampaolo and Toro for the first time as a former. After his experience between 2020 and 2021 ended with his exoneration, Giampaolo will challenge Torino as an “old acquaintance.” So, a heartfelt match is expected on both benches.
