Milan turn, sporting director chosen: arrives from Wales

Milan has reportedly finally chosen its new sporting director: surprisingly, he is an executive from Wales

We may have reached a turning point, months away, in the search for a sports director. And, as widely expected, we are approaching a disappointing choice that is unlikely to bring the added value that this team and especially this management needs. The decider is Giorgio Furlani: he is the one who met with all the various candidates, starting with Fabio Paratici, with whom an agreement had been reached on everything until a turnaround that did not surprise us.

Since Milan has been in the hands of American funds, several times there have been these sudden retreats: one example out of all, that for Marcus Thuram (later ended up at Inter) but there are many others. Also met several times Igli Tare, currently free, but evidently not convincing; difficult to get to Tony D’Amico, the favorite, armored by an important contract with Atalanta. And, speaking of the orobici, Milan’s choice might just be a former Nerazzurri.

Sorpresa Milan, ecco il direttore sportivo: ora c’è lui in pole

According to a report today in Gazzetta dello Sport, Lee Congerton is now reportedly in pole to become the sporting director of AC Milan. He is a former Welsh footballer, battered by injuries, who became first coach and then manager. He is 51 years old and not a household name, but he knows his stuff: he has experience in the Bundesliga with Hamburg (where he bought a very young Hakan Calhanoglu) and also in the Premier League, until joining Atalanta in 2022.

His experience with Orobici ended last year, in March, following a call from Saudi Arabia, where he still is: at the moment Congerton is the sporting director of Al-Ahli but he could soon leave to start a new adventure in Italy, at AC Milan. For Furlani, explains Gazzetta dello Sport, he is the right profile because he is used to working in a group and, above all, he already has experience. Congerton therefore gains important positions in the hierarchies to hold this position in the Rossoneri, but others remain in the running.

Tare is an option still to be kept warm (he was at the Olimpico for the Coppa Italia final but there has been no contact with Milan executives) as is D’Amico. The current Atalanta sporting director was recently armored by Percassi and has a long and rich contract. The announcement from Milan could come at the end of the championship: Congerton leaps into pole position, but with this club in the middle any possibility of surprise is always around the corner.
