Lecce-Torino, the history: the Salento land of granata disappointments

I precedenti della sfida tra Lecce e Torino: bilancio molto equilibrato, ma le volte in cui hanno vinto i salentini hanno fatto molto male

-2 at the end of a championship that amid highs and lows has seen Torino once again navigate mid-table. The granata aim to close on a high note after the last few disappointing games, and to do so they must without ifs and buts beat Lecce, which for its part is in vital need of salvation points. Salento, however, is a land that has often left the Granata disappointed. The 10 previous Serie A fixtures speak of three wins on each side and four draws, with the granata in recent years coming off two wins in a row.

L’ultimo precedente: lo 0-1 targato Buongiorno

Last year Lecce and Torino faced each other at the Via del Mare in October, at a still rather embryonic stage of the league. It was D’Aversa versus Juric, and it was the Croatian coach who prevailed, winning 0-1 thanks to a Buongiorno goal at 41′. It was a success that felt very much like a breath of fresh air, given the Granata team’s previous period of crisis.

La retrocessione del 2000

The Salentini were judges of relegation to Serie B in 2000. The team coached by Emiliano Mondonico had to leave the top league following a 2-1 defeat in Puglia, made all the more stinging by the fact that the Giallorossi at the time were coming off a more than bad run of form.

Il flop del 1989

Not only the one in 2000: Lecce was also responsible for Torino’s descent to B in the 1988/89 season. That was the second relegation in Granata history, which came after a dramatic match lost 3-1. Indeed, one remembers the tears of the fans and especially the players at the final whistle, which was followed by a protest in Caselle when the team returned to the city.
