Tense morning in Pietralata, where preliminary operations are underway for archaeological excavations related to the new Roma stadium project. Activities came to an abrupt halt due to a protest by a group of about fifty protesters belonging to the civic coordination “Yes to Park, Yes to Hospital, No to Stadium,” who blocked access to the construction site area.
It all started with the arrival of a truck loaded with materials intended for fencing the area. The vehicle managed to enter, but shortly afterwards other trucks arrived with additional fencing, finding the way blocked by protesters. The blockade necessitated the intervention of the police, who were present with two vans, to try to create a gap and ensure vehicle access.
The situation quickly became delicate. Amidst chants, banners and passive resistance, activists reiterated their no to the construction of the plant in the chosen area, demanding instead that it be designated for a public park and health facilities. Faced with growing tension, Roma representatives on the scene decided, in agreement with the police, to suspend all activities for today, pending new developments.
In the meantime, consultations are underway among the parties involved to assess the next steps and figure out how to continue operations without further disruption. A new obstacle, then, along the path that should lead Roma to finally build a stadium of its own.
