Vlasic or Adams: here’s how the penalty taker is chosen (but only the Croatian scores…)

I due tiri dal dischetto realizzati in questo campionato portano la firma del 10, Sanabria e Adams li hanno invece sbagliati

But wasn’t Adams the penalty taker? After the referee whistled the penalty for Torino and Vlasic took the ball in his hand, many must have wondered why the Scot did not go to the penalty spot. Legitimate question considering that, after his mistake against Verona, Vanoli had explained that Adams would be the one to kick the next penalty as well, since he was the main penalty taker: against Venezia, instead, the forward did not even think about it for a moment to go and shoot.

Godinho: “Dipende da chi gioca titolare”

The reason why it was Vlasic, rather than Adams, who was in charge of the execution was explained by Godinho in the postgame: “The penalty taker is a player on the field from the start, so in this case it was one between Vlasic and Sanabria. That’s why Nikola shot.” Adams came on at halftime in place of Sanabria, which is why he climbed behind the number 10 in the hierarchies against Venezia. If the Scot had played from the first minute, he would have been the one to take responsibility for kicking the penalty instead.

Vlasic perfetto dal dischetto

The numbers, however, reward Vlasic: of the four penalties that have been awarded to Torino this season only two have been scored and both by the Croatian himself. The first one was scored at San Siro against Inter and allowed them to shorten the distance in the final, the second is precisely the one kicked yesterday that allowed the granata to reach Venezia at 1-1. The other two shots from the penalty spot, on the other hand, were missed: Sanabria in the first leg against Verona had hit the post on the 1-1 scoreline (the match was then won 3-2), Adams in the return leg had been hypnotized by Montipò. Looking at the statistics, Vlasic would probably deserve to be first in the hierarchy of shooters from the penalty spot, regardless of who takes the field from the start.

Nikola Vlasic of Torino FC scores a goal from a penalty kick during the Serie A football match between FC Internazionale and Torino FC.
