In recent weeks, there has been persistent talk of Milan’s need for a new sporting director, a very important figure. There are shortcomings in the current management, and hiring an experienced executive could strengthen a management structure that appears quite weak.
The triad consisting of Giorgio Furlani, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Geoffrey Moncada has shown great limitations, although not all the choices have been wrong. There is a lack of experience and, unfortunately, there also seems to be some conceit and superficiality in their actions. Although all three are now familiar with Milan, their actions are not up to the standards of such an important club.
Milan-Bologna, l’iniziativa si ripete: succederà di nuovo
None of the three is likely to leave at the end of the season, so the hope is to see something better in the future. If they were to be joined by an experienced ds, it would certainly help.

In recent days there seem to be two main candidates for the position of sporting director: Igli Tare and Tony D’Amico. The former Lazio man is free of contractual ties and can sign immediately; there have already been some meetings to talk about Milan’s revival plans. Unlike the Albanian, the former Hellas Verona man has a contract until June 2027 and Atalanta would like to keep him on.
There was also talk of the Giovanni Sartori hypothesis, but after renewing with Bologna he is unlikely to leave the Rossoblu club. There was no shortage of foreign names, such as Markus Kroesche of Eintracht Frankfurt. However, the preference seems to be for a manager who is already familiar with Italian as well as international soccer.
At the moment, there is no choice on the part of Milan and it looked like it should come by the end of April. According to what La Gazzetta dello Sport explained, one scenario that seemed highly unlikely should not be 100% ruled out: if Furlani does not find the right person to be given the sporting director’s chair, no one may arrive. The managerial organization chart would remain unchanged.
It would be surprising if Milan does not eventually hire a ds, however, as of today it is something that should not be discarded completely. The practice is going on for a long time and a big club that needs to relaunch itself should plan for the future a bit in advance. A direction should be chosen soon.
